World Habitat Day is a UN day for taking stock of towns and cities and of everyone's basic right to adequate shelter. It opens Urban October, a month of events on housing and sustainable urban growth led by UN-Habitat.
About World Habitat Day
World Habitat Day looks at the places people live, from crowded informal settlements to fast-growing cities, and asks whether they offer safe, affordable and decent homes. The UN treats adequate housing as a human right and notes that billions of people still lack it, with more than a billion living in informal settlements and hundreds of millions affected by homelessness. Conflict, disasters and climate change add to the pressure.
The United Nations designated the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day in 1985, and the first observance was held in 1986 with Nairobi, Kenya, as host city and the theme "Shelter is My Right." Nairobi is also the headquarters of UN-Habitat, the UN Human Settlements Programme, which leads the day. Each year it picks a theme and a host city for the global observance; earlier hosts include New York, London, Bonn, Fukuoka, Rio de Janeiro, Washington, D.C., and Shanghai.
For 2026, UN-Habitat chose the theme "Adequate Housing for All," with the global observance in Muscat, Oman, from October 5 to 8. The day also launches Urban October, a month of discussions and community events on the future of cities that ends with World Cities Day on October 31. UN-Habitat uses the occasion to present its Scroll of Honour Award, created in 1989, which recognizes people and projects that have improved housing and urban life.

- Volunteer with a local group that builds, repairs or weatherizes homes for low-income families.
- Attend a planning or zoning meeting, or read the agenda online, to see how housing decisions are made where you live.
- Donate to or volunteer at a shelter or a program that supports people experiencing homelessness.
- Walk your neighborhood and note what makes it livable or hard to live in, such as sidewalks, transit, shade and green space, then share the list with local officials.
