World Diabetes Day is the main global awareness campaign on diabetes, focused on prevention, early diagnosis and access to care for people living with the condition. The International Diabetes Federation leads it, and it has been an official UN day since 2006.
About World Diabetes Day
Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin or the body can't use the insulin it makes, so blood sugar stays too high. Over time that can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. WHO notes that the onset of type 2 diabetes, the most common form, can often be prevented or delayed through a healthy weight, regular physical activity, a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco. The day pushes for earlier diagnosis, affordable treatment and education so people can manage the condition well.
The International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization created World Diabetes Day in 1991, in response to growing concern about diabetes as a health and economic threat. November 14 is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, the Canadian scientist who, working with Charles Best in Toronto, helped discover insulin in the early 1920s.
On December 20, 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 61/225, which designated November 14 as a United Nations day to be observed every year starting in 2007. The resolution encouraged countries to develop national policies for diabetes prevention, treatment and care. The IDF chooses a theme for each year's campaign and invites health groups, schools and individuals to register their own activities.
