National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan day of action that helps eligible Americans register to vote, check their registration and update it after a move or name change. Volunteers and organizations nationwide have run it since 2012.

About National Voter Registration Day

In the US, most people must register before they can vote, and the rules and deadlines vary by state; some states require registration weeks before an election. People who move or change their name often need to update their records, and many have never been asked to register at all. On this day, libraries, colleges, food pantries, election offices, businesses and community groups set up tables, host online drives and share deadlines so that eligible voters are ready before the next election.

The first National Voter Registration Day took place on September 25, 2012, with hundreds of partner organizations signing up. It is now run by Nonprofit VOTE, a nonpartisan nonprofit, and the organizers say partners have helped more than 6.5 million people register since the first one. The day is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State, the National Association of State Election Directors and the US Election Assistance Commission.

The date is a Tuesday in September chosen by the organizers, and it has shifted over time. Early years used the fourth Tuesday; a 2017 Senate resolution described it that way. From 2022 to 2026 it fell on the third Tuesday, and the organizers have announced September 14, 2027, a second Tuesday, for the next one. The US Senate has passed resolutions recognizing the day in most recent years, including September 15, 2026.
