National Vietnam War Veterans Day honors the Americans who served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War era and their families. It falls on the anniversary of the day in 1973 when the last US combat troops left Vietnam.
About National Vietnam War Veterans Day
The date has a specific meaning. On March 29, 1973, US Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and the last US combat troops departed the country. Many of the more than three million Americans who served in the war came home without the recognition they had earned, and the day is partly an effort to give them a welcome that was long overdue. More than 58,000 Americans died in the war; their names are on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Presidential recognition came first. On March 29, 2012, President Barack Obama issued Proclamation 8789, declaring that day Vietnam Veterans Day as part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the war. Congress then made the date permanent through the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017, which passed the Senate on February 3 and the House on March 21, 2017. President Donald Trump signed it on March 28, 2017, as Public Law 115-15. The law adds National Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29, to the list of days in 4 U.S.C. 6 on which the US flag should especially be displayed.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the day honors everyone who served on active duty in the US armed forces at any time from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of where they served, along with their families. VA medical centers, veterans' organizations and communities hold ceremonies, and the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration has presented lapel pins to veterans of the era. The day is a commemorative observance, not a federal holiday.
