National S'mores Day is an informal US summer food holiday for the s'more, a toasted marshmallow and a piece of chocolate pressed between graham crackers. The campfire treat spread through Girl Scout troops in the 1920s.
About National S'mores Day
The s'more is one of the few snacks whose spread can be traced through scouting. For years the first printed recipe was said to be in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, a 1927 handbook, credited to a troop leader named Loretta Scott Crew. National Geographic reported in 2025 that Girl Scouts historians could find no trace of Crew in the organization's archives, and that the recipe appeared earlier: in May 1925 the magazine The Girl Scout Leader ran a weekend hike plan by Dorothy Christian Moore, known as Cookie, which ended with a dessert of graham crackers, chocolate bars and toasted marshmallows called a somemore.
The idea traveled quickly. According to the same report, newspapers in Buffalo and Rochester printed versions in 1925, troops in at least 22 states mentioned the treat by the end of that year, and a Minnesota troop was already shortening the name to s'mores. The contraction of "some more" hints at why the snack lasted: it's hard to stop at one.
No founder or founding year is documented for National S'mores Day, and it has no government status. It falls in the middle of the US camping season, and outdoor programs, parks, camps and food writers use it to share campfire recipes and fire-safety reminders.

How to mark National S'mores Day
- Toast marshmallows slowly over glowing coals rather than open flame for an even golden outside and a soft center.
- If you build a campfire, check local fire restrictions first, keep water and a shovel nearby, and drown the fire completely before you leave.
- Make indoor s'mores under the oven broiler or in a skillet when a fire isn't possible or allowed.
- Try a variation: swap in dark chocolate, a peanut butter cup, sliced strawberries or a chocolate graham cracker.
- Share the story of the Girl Scout leader behind the 1925 recipe with kids at a camp or backyard cookout.
