About National Siblings Day

Siblings Day recognizes a relationship that often lasts longer than any other in a person's life. It includes full, half, step, adopted and foster siblings, and it is also a day to remember brothers and sisters who have died or who have been separated by distance or family circumstances.

Claudia Evart created the day and founded the Siblings Day Foundation in 1995, after losing both of her siblings in separate accidents. Her sister Lisette died in 1972 at age 19, and her brother Alan died in 1987. April 10 was Lisette's birthday. In 2001, Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York praised Evart's campaign in a statement printed in the Congressional Record.

Siblings Day is not a federal holiday, and Congress has never passed a law creating it. Its standing comes from proclamations and letters of support. According to a University at Albany alumni profile of Evart, governors in 49 states have recognized the day, and Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama sent letters acknowledging it. The day has also spread to other countries, helped by social media, where people post childhood photos of themselves with their siblings.

How to mark National Siblings Day

• Call, text or visit a brother or sister and bring up a specific memory you share.
• Dig out old family photos and share a few in a group chat with your siblings.
• If you live far apart, set up a video call and put the next get-together on the calendar.
• If you've lost a sibling, mark the day in a way that feels right, such as visiting a place they loved or cooking their favorite meal.
• Reach out to a sibling you've drifted from, even with a short message that asks nothing in return.
