National Peanut Butter Day is an informal US food holiday for peanut butter, the spread of ground roasted peanuts that became an American lunchbox staple in the 20th century. Nutrition educators and food writers use it to talk about the crop and the spread's history.

About National Peanut Butter Day

People ground peanuts into pastes long before the modern jar: the University of Florida's agriculture institute, UF/IFAS, traces the idea back to the Incas and Aztecs. The spread Americans know took shape in North America in the late 1800s. Canadian chemist Marcellus Gilmore Edson patented a peanut paste in 1884. In 1895 John Harvey Kellogg, the Battle Creek doctor better known for breakfast cereal, applied for a patent on a process for making peanut butter, which was first promoted as a protein-rich food for people who had trouble chewing. Ambrose Straub patented a peanut butter machine in 1903, and the spread became popular with US soldiers during both world wars.

George Washington Carver is often credited with inventing peanut butter, but he did not. As Biography.com notes, Carver developed hundreds of products from the peanut plant at Tuskegee, yet peanut butter was already being eaten by the mid-1890s. His work promoting peanuts as a crop for Southern farmers helped tie his name to it anyway.

No founder or founding year is documented for National Peanut Butter Day, and it has no government status. University extension services, such as the University of Florida's UF/IFAS, have used the January date for nutrition and agriculture education.
