About International Holocaust Remembrance Day
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a day of mourning and of learning. It remembers the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered in the Holocaust, about one-third of the Jewish people at the time, along with members of other groups the Nazi regime persecuted and killed, including Roma and Sinti and people with disabilities. Governments, schools, museums and faith communities hold ceremonies, survivor talks and readings of victims' names.
The UN General Assembly established the day with resolution 60/7, adopted on November 1, 2005. The date, January 27, marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi German concentration and death camp, by Soviet troops in 1945. The UN's formal name for the observance is the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, and it was first held in 2006.
The same resolution rejected any denial of the Holocaust and set up the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme, which works with partners around the world on remembrance and education aimed at preventing future genocide. Later resolutions, 61/255 and 76/250, condemned Holocaust denial and distortion. Many countries also hold their own days of remembrance, and the date is observed in the United Kingdom as Holocaust Memorial Day.
