The International Day of Yoga is a UN day celebrating yoga, the ancient Indian practice that combines physical postures, breathing and meditation, and encouraging people everywhere to make healthier lifestyle choices.
About International Day of Yoga
The International Day of Yoga invites people of every age and fitness level to try yoga or deepen an existing practice, often through free group sessions in parks, schools, offices and public squares. Large events take place across India and at UN Headquarters in New York, where India's Permanent Mission to the UN organizes an observance with the UN Secretariat.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the day in his speech at the opening of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2014. The draft resolution drew support from a record 175 member states, and on December 11, 2014, the Assembly adopted resolution 69/131, proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The first observance was held in 2015. The date falls on or near the June solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
The resolution stresses the value of people making healthier choices and following lifestyles that support good health. WHO, for its part, has urged countries to reduce physical inactivity, a major risk factor for heart disease, cancer and diabetes. In 2016 UNESCO added yoga to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Each year has a theme; the 2026 observance focused on yoga for healthy ageing.
