Why Is Thanksgiving on a Thursday? The History Behind the Date

By the UpcomingDays editorial team · Updated · 4 min read

Thanksgiving is on a Thursday because a 1941 federal law fixes it on the fourth Thursday in November. That law locked in a Thursday habit that goes back to George Washington’s 1789 proclamation. In 2026, Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26.

No law explains why the very first national days of thanksgiving were Thursdays; presidents simply kept proclaiming Thursdays, and the custom stuck. What the law did settle, after a two-year fight in 1939 and 1940, was which Thursday. This guide walks through that history, shows the dates through 2030, explains the earliest and latest possible dates, and covers what the Thursday means for the long weekend that follows. (Canada settled its holiday differently, on a Monday in October; see Canadian Thanksgiving 2026.)

Why is Thanksgiving on a Thursday? A tradition from Washington to Lincoln

The Thursday pattern is older than the federal holiday itself:

  • 1789: President Washington proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving for Thursday, November 26, 1789.
  • 1795: he called a second one for Thursday, February 19, 1795.
  • 1863: President Lincoln asked the country to observe “the last Thursday of November” as a day of thanksgiving. From then on, presidents proclaimed the day every year.
  • 1870: Congress made Thanksgiving one of the first four paid holidays for federal workers in the District of Columbia, but each year’s date still came from the President’s proclamation.

Between 1869 and 1939, the proclaimed date was usually the last Thursday in November, occasionally the first Thursday in December, according to the Congressional Research Service.

1939: the year Thanksgiving moved

November 1939 had five Thursdays, so the last one was November 30. Retailers worried that such a late Thanksgiving would cut the Christmas shopping season short. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thursday, November 23, 1939 instead, one week earlier. Critics nicknamed the earlier date “Franksgiving.”

The country split. According to the National Archives, 32 states followed the President and 16 kept the last Thursday, so for two years Americans celebrated on two different days. Roosevelt did it again in 1940, moving the holiday to November 21 rather than November 28. By May 1941 the administration had concluded the experiment hadn’t worked.

1941: Congress picks the fourth Thursday

In October 1941 the House passed a resolution fixing Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November. The Senate changed it to the fourth Thursday, which accounts for the years when November has five Thursdays. Roosevelt signed the joint resolution on December 26, 1941, and the fourth-Thursday rule has applied since Thanksgiving 1942. Today it is written into 5 U.S.C. 6103, the federal holiday law.

“Fourth” and “last” give the same date in most years. They differ only when November starts on a Wednesday or a Thursday, which gives the month five Thursdays:

Year Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday) Last Thursday of November
2026 Thursday, November 26, 2026 Same day
2027 Thursday, November 25, 2027 Same day
2028 Thursday, November 23, 2028 November 30, 2028
2029 Thursday, November 22, 2029 November 29, 2029
2030 Thursday, November 28, 2030 Same day

Under the pre-1941 custom, Thanksgiving 2028 and 2029 would have been a week later than they will be. Count down to this year’s date with days until Thanksgiving.

The earliest and latest Thanksgiving dates

The fourth Thursday of any month falls between the 22nd and the 28th, so Thanksgiving can never be earlier than November 22 or later than November 28.

  • Earliest (November 22): next in 2029, then 2035 and 2040.
  • Latest (November 28): next in 2030, then 2036.

A late Thanksgiving leaves fewer days before Christmas. In 2026 there are 29 days from Thanksgiving to Christmas Day; in 2029 there will be 33. The holiday’s position also sets the dates for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

How to work out Thanksgiving’s date in any year

You only need to know what day of the week November 1 falls on:

  1. Find the first Thursday in November. If November 1 is a Thursday, that’s it; otherwise count forward to the next Thursday, which will be between November 2 and 7.
  2. Add 21 days. The result is the fourth Thursday, and that’s Thanksgiving.

In 2026, November 1 is a Sunday, so the first Thursday is November 5 and Thanksgiving is November 26, as the November 2026 calendar shows. The day of the week calculator tells you the weekday of November 1 in any year. Here are the next few dates worked out:

Year Thanksgiving
2031 Thursday, November 27, 2031
2032 Thursday, November 25, 2032
2033 Thursday, November 24, 2033
2034 Thursday, November 23, 2034
2035 Thursday, November 22, 2035

Why Thursday makes a four-day weekend

A Thursday holiday sits two days from the weekend, and that gap is where the four-day Thanksgiving break comes from. Only Thursday is a federal holiday. The Friday after is not, but many employers and state governments give it off.

Day Federal status What’s typical
Thursday, November 26, 2026 Federal holiday Federal offices, post offices, banks and the stock market closed
Friday, November 27, 2026 Regular workday Post offices and the Federal Reserve open; NYSE closes early at 1:00 p.m. ET; many employers give the day off
Saturday–Sunday, November 28–29 Weekend Weekend

The early stock market close comes from the NYSE holiday calendar. If your employer doesn’t give Friday off, one vacation day turns the holiday into four days off in a row. The 2026 holiday calendar shows the rest of the season.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Thanksgiving always on a Thursday?

Federal law since 1941 sets it on the fourth Thursday in November. The Thursday itself comes from presidential proclamations going back to Washington in 1789 and Lincoln in 1863, which both named Thursdays.

When did Thanksgiving become the fourth Thursday in November?

Roosevelt signed the joint resolution on December 26, 1941, and it first applied to Thanksgiving 1942. Before that, the date was set each year by presidential proclamation, usually on the last Thursday.

What was “Franksgiving”?

The nickname for Roosevelt’s earlier Thanksgiving in 1939 and 1940, moved up a week to lengthen the Christmas shopping season. Sixteen states refused to follow it, so the country celebrated on two different Thursdays.

What is the earliest date Thanksgiving can be?

November 22. The latest is November 28. The next November 22 Thanksgiving is in 2029.

Is the day after Thanksgiving a federal holiday?

No. Federal offices are open on the Friday after Thanksgiving, although many state governments and private employers give the day off.
