Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, 2027, with the first fast that day, and to end with Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, March 9, 2027. These are calculated dates. The actual start depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, so it can shift by a day, and it can differ from one country or community to another.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed with fasting from dawn to sunset. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, Ramadan starts about 11 days earlier each year. This guide covers the expected 2027 dates, why they can change, the yearly shift through 2030, and practical planning for work, school and travel.

Why the start date can move by a day
Islamic months last 29 or 30 days. Each one begins when the thin crescent of the new moon is first seen after sunset. A calculated calendar predicts that moment from astronomy, but many communities wait for an actual sighting, either locally or by a national authority, before declaring the month.
The astronomical new moon comes first: in 2027 it falls on Saturday, February 6 at 15:56 UTC, according to our 2027 moon phase calendar. The crescent usually becomes visible a day or more later. Weather, location and the method a community follows all play a part, which is why one country can start Ramadan on Monday and another on Tuesday.
The end works the same way. If the Shawwal crescent is seen on the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan, Eid is the next day. If not, Ramadan runs a 30th day and Eid follows. For 2027 that means Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday, March 9, or on Wednesday, March 10. Our world holiday data already shows this split: Saudi Arabia’s calendar has Eid on March 9 and Singapore’s has it on March 10.
How Ramadan shifts each year, 2026 to 2030
The Islamic year has 12 lunar months and lasts 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than the 365-day Gregorian year. Ramadan moves through all the seasons over roughly 33 years.
| Year | Ramadan begins (expected) | Eid al-Fitr (expected) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Wednesday, February 18, 2026 | Friday, March 20, 2026 |
| 2027 | Monday, February 8, 2027 | Tuesday, March 9, 2027 |
| 2028 | Friday, January 28, 2028 | Saturday, February 26, 2028 |
| 2029 | Tuesday, January 16, 2029 | Wednesday, February 14, 2029 |
| 2030 | Saturday, January 5, 2030 | Monday, February 4, 2030 |
Because the shift continues, 2030 is expected to have two Ramadan starts: one on January 5 and another on Thursday, December 26, 2030. All dates can move by a day with moon sighting.
Fasting, iftar and Eid in brief
The Ramadan fast is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Muslims who fast eat and drink only before dawn and after sunset. The pre-dawn meal is called suhoor and the meal that breaks the fast at sunset is iftar. The month is also a time for prayer, reflection and reading the Qur’an.
The last ten nights are considered especially important, because one of them is Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power. Many Muslims mark it on the 27th night; in 2027 that falls around March 5–6.
Eid al-Fitr, the “Feast of Fast-Breaking,” begins on 1 Shawwal and is marked with prayer, shared meals, family visits and gifts. The other major festival, Eid al-Adha, is expected on Sunday, May 16, 2027; see the Eid al-Adha countdown.
Ramadan 2027 timing: winter days and the clock change
A February–March Ramadan means short fasting days in the northern hemisphere compared with a summer Ramadan, because the time between dawn and sunset is shorter. Fasting hours get a little longer each day as sunrise moves earlier and sunset later through the month.
US clocks spring forward on Sunday, March 14, 2027, after Ramadan has ended, so iftar times won’t jump by an hour partway through the month as they can in years when the change falls during Ramadan. In Europe the clocks change later, on March 28. For daylight saving details see our daylight saving time guide.
February 2027 is also crowded with other dates. Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, February 6, two days before Ramadan starts (see our Chinese New Year 2027 guide). Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, is Wednesday, February 10, so in 2027 Lent overlaps almost all of Ramadan.
Planning for work, school and travel
- Work: Ramadan and Eid aren’t federal holidays in the US, so offices, banks and markets keep normal hours. If you plan to take Eid off, request leave for both March 9 and March 10, since you won’t know the exact day until the night before.
- School: some US school districts close for Eid. Check your district’s calendar, and talk to teachers early about exams or sports during fasting hours.
- Meetings: colleagues who are fasting may prefer meetings earlier in the day and no working lunches. Avoid scheduling events right at sunset.
- Travel: in many Muslim-majority countries, business hours change during Ramadan and Eid is a public holiday. Saudi Arabia’s calendar lists Eid al-Fitr holidays from March 9; see public holidays in Saudi Arabia in 2027.
