About Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival, known in Chinese as Zhongqiu Jie, falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, when the moon is full and traditionally thought to be at its brightest. After the Lunar New Year, it is one of the most widely celebrated dates in the Chinese calendar. It began as a harvest celebration tied to moon worship, and today its main theme is family reunion. The full, round moon symbolizes a complete family, so people travel home, share a meal and go outside afterward to look at the moon together.

Mooncakes are the food everyone associates with the festival. These round, dense pastries are usually filled with sweet lotus-seed or red-bean paste, and many hold a salted egg yolk in the center to represent the moon. Boxes of them are swapped among relatives, friends and business contacts in the weeks before. Children carry glowing lanterns, and families retell the story of Chang'e, who drank an elixir of immortality and floated up to live on the moon, leaving her husband, the archer Hou Yi, behind on earth.

Mainland China has made the festival a public holiday since 2008, and Taiwan also gives the day off, while Hong Kong and Macau take the following day. Korea celebrates the same full moon as Chuseok, a multiday holiday centered on honoring ancestors, so Chuseok usually shares this date. Vietnam marks it as Tet Trung Thu, a festival for children with lantern parades and lion dances, and in Japan the same full moon is admired in moon-viewing gatherings. Because it follows the lunisolar calendar, the festival moves between early September and early October; the date shown is mainland China's.
