About Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon. It was first run on April 19, 1897, a year after the marathon debuted at the first modern Olympics, with 15 starters; John J. McDermott of New York won. The Boston Athletic Association, which staged that first race, still organizes it today, and the field now numbers in the tens of thousands. The point-to-point course covers 26.2 miles, starting in the town of Hopkinton and passing through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley and Newton and Brookline before finishing on Boylston Street near Copley Square in Boston.

The race is held on Patriots' Day, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, the opening fights of the American Revolution. Since 1969, Massachusetts has observed the holiday on the third Monday in April, and Maine follows the same schedule, so many residents of both states have the day off. Locals often call it Marathon Monday. The Boston Red Sox play a morning home game at Fenway Park that day, and towns around Lexington and Concord stage battle reenactments.

Boston is unusual among big marathons because most runners must earn a spot by finishing another certified marathon within a qualifying time set for their age and gender. The Newton hills, capped by Heartbreak Hill around mile 20, are the course's toughest stretch. Women were officially allowed to enter in 1972, and the wheelchair division began in 1975. The 2013 race was struck by a bombing near the finish line. In 2020 the race was canceled for the first time because of COVID-19, and the 2021 race was moved to October.
