There are 12 full moons in 2027. The first is the Wolf Moon on Friday, January 22, 2027 at 7:17 a.m. EST, and the last is the Cold Moon on Monday, December 13, 2027 at 11:09 a.m. EST. No month has two full moons in 2027, but the Flower Moon on May 20 counts as a seasonal blue moon.
Below you’ll find every full moon of 2027 with its traditional name and the exact time in US Eastern time and UTC, what the names mean, why the Harvest Moon falls in September this year, and how the two kinds of blue moon work. Times are for the instant the moon is exactly full.

Two full moons land on different dates depending on where you are. The Strawberry Moon is on the evening of June 18 in the US but in the early hours of June 19 in UTC, and so in the UK and Europe. The Beaver Moon is late on November 13 in Eastern time and November 14 in UTC. Our 2027 moon phase calendar shows every new moon, quarter and full moon in your own time zone.
What the full moon names mean
The names used in most US calendars come from Native American, Colonial American and other traditional North American sources, as collected by The Old Farmer’s Almanac. They are one widely used set of names rather than the only one.
- Wolf Moon (January): wolves were often heard howling at this time of year.
- Snow Moon (February): traditionally the month with the most snow.
- Worm Moon (March): earthworms appear as the soil warms, or beetle larvae emerge from tree bark.
- Pink Moon (April): named for moss pink, one of the first wildflowers of spring.
- Flower Moon (May): flowers bloom in abundance.
- Strawberry Moon (June): wild strawberries ripen and are ready to gather.
- Buck Moon (July): male deer’s new antlers are in full growth.
- Sturgeon Moon (August): lake sturgeon were an important food for Native American peoples at this time of year.
- Harvest Moon (September in 2027): the full moon closest to the September equinox, around the time corn and other crops are ready to harvest.
- Hunter’s Moon (October): game had fattened for winter and hunting season began.
- Beaver Moon (November): beavers finished their winter preparations and retreated into their lodges.
- Cold Moon (December): winter cold takes hold.
Why the Harvest Moon is in September
The Harvest Moon isn’t tied to a month. It’s the full moon nearest the September equinox, which in 2027 falls at 2:01 a.m. EDT on Thursday, September 23. The September 15 full moon is 8 days before the equinox, while the October 15 full moon is 22 days after, so September’s moon takes the name. In a year when the October full moon is closer to the equinox, the Harvest Moon moves to October, and September’s full moon goes by its other traditional name, the Corn Moon.
Is there a blue moon in 2027?
NASA describes two kinds of blue moon:
- Monthly blue moon: the second full moon in a single calendar month. 2027 has none, since each month has exactly one full moon. The most recent was on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the second full moon of May that year.
- Seasonal blue moon: when an astronomical season has four full moons instead of the usual three, the third one is the blue moon.
Spring 2027 runs from the March equinox (4:24 p.m. EDT, March 20) to the June solstice (10:10 a.m. EDT, June 21). Four full moons fit inside it: March 22, April 20, May 20 and June 18. That makes the Flower Moon on Thursday, May 20, 2027 a seasonal blue moon. Neither kind of blue moon looks blue; the name is about the calendar, not the color.
How the lunar cycle lines up with the calendar
A full lunar cycle, from one new moon to the next, takes about 29.5 days. Twelve cycles add up to about 354 days, which is 11 days short of a calendar year. That’s why the full moons arrive about 11 days earlier each year: the Wolf Moon is on January 22 in 2027 but on January 11, 2028 in Eastern time. Some years have room for a 13th full moon. 2026 is one of them, with 13, which is how May 2026 ended up with two.
The same lunar cycle sets the dates of many festivals. Diwali, for example, falls on the new moon of October 29, 2027, two weeks after the Hunter’s Moon; see our Diwali 2027 guide. And for the equinox and solstice times used above, see the 2027 seasons guide.
Planning a full moon night
- Check the time, not just the date. Five 2027 full moons peak in the evening, Eastern time: February 20, April 20, June 18, September 15 and November 13. The rest peak in the morning or around midday, so the night before is often the better time to look.
- Weekends: the Snow Moon (Saturday, February 20), the Buck Moon (Sunday, July 18) and the Beaver Moon (Saturday, November 13) fall on weekends in 2027.
- Countdowns: the moon phase calculator shows tonight’s phase and the days until the next full moon. For this year’s dates, see the 2026 moon calendar.
